RED DEVIL COMIX

24-page digest with Color Covers
Published by Thru Black Holes Comix
Copyright 2006
cover MICHAEL RODEN
The wraparound cover reproduces a strikingly atmospheric MR painting of a Crazy Man Devil Head (with horns added for the occasion) flying through a creepy night sky. As a finishing touch, a small devil-head logo was added to the front cover. The cover alone is worth the price of this comix!

page 2 MICHAEL RODEN (Go to Hell!)
This is a wonderful collage-drawing in the general form of a travel poster. It's fun and it's creepy and I love it!

I left the spewing lava white so it would appear almost blinding.
MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22, 2006.

pp 3-5 MICHAEL RODEN (The Giant Flying Devil Head)
This brief story includes some totally amazing art depicting a glowing Giant Flying Devil Head (thus the title) menacing helpless citizens as it blazes through the night sky. The panel at the top of p 5 actually looks like it's glowing!

The Giant Flying Devil Head is an adaptation of a song that I wrote. The actual song is a solo song. The band could never really follow the feeling and chords of the song after many tries. It's actually a kind of silly song. But I always meant it to be. The art illustrates it perfectly. I especially like the detail and the lighting/shading. Plus the little guys that the Big Head is after are like little Dough-Boys, and can also be seen on the cover. MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22, 2006

page 6 MICHAEL RODEN (The Loose Bohemian)
This page reproduces the lyrics to a TBH Band song along with a small collage.

The Loose Bohemian is meant to be a Dada Poetry song. On the song I spoke the words in a Captain Beefheart Style. The music is chaotic and went perfect. Nothing sacrilegious was really intended, as was the case with the entire book. MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22,2006

page 7 MICHAEL RODEN (Zebra Devil Monster)
This cool page originally appeared (in slightly different form) in the totally obscure HPL fanzine QUEER MADNESS Number 2 as well as on the back cover of the almost equally obscure THE LOOKING GLASS Number 15. This is a cool late-1970s image that still looks fresh and exciting twenty-five years after it was drawn.

The Zebra-Monster-Demon is adapted from an earlier drawing. The stars are different and I added horns. MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22,2006

page 8 MICHAEL RODEN (The Grim Reaper)
This incredibly detailed drawing reminds me of the wonderful illustrations from the Golden Age of fantasy and horror magazines.

I really like the child-like innocence of the Grim Reaper portrait.

pp 9-11 MICHAEL RODEN (The Tragicall Historie of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus)
This wonderful all-collage story is made all the more wonderful and mysterious by the use of old German text and a spooky black background. This is an especially fine example of the MR collage technique.

The Tragicall History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus actually has a TBHB song too. It's "Still Alive" from 1983. MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22, 2006

pp 12-13 MICHAEL RODEN (At Home with the Devil)
This fun three-panel story shows us the more human side of The Devil.

At Home with the Devil comes from several songs ... The Tiny Man, The Devil Boy Comes Back from Space, Planet Head, and My Long Arm. MR: email to DLC dated Apr 22,2006

page 14 ANDY NUKES and MICHAEL RODEN (Devil Dog Cemetery Scene)
This cool page places a weird ANDY NUKES Devil Dog against a spooky MICHAEL RODEN collage background. Dig it.

pp 15-17 TOM BRINKMANN (Red Devil)
This three-page story is told via the tattoo-influenced stylings of long-time TBHC collaborator TOM BRINKMANN.

page 18 ED H. DORN (A Ladder Down to Hell)
This delightfully creepy vintage (1978) drawing has lingered in the TBH vaults for almost thirty years awaiting the publication of RED DEVIL COMIX. This is a cool page!

page 19 ANDY NUKES and MICHAEL RODEN (Monster in a Graveyard)
This cool page depicts a rather pissed-off looking monster set against a spooky graveyard background.

pp 20-22 MICHAEL RODEN and BOB X (When Hell Froze Over!)
This cool (pun intended) story includes a couple of great BOB X images and a fun story about, well, just what the title says it's about. Read it and see what happened!

page 22 Information page (bottom half)

page 23 JEFF GAITHER and MICHAEL RODEN (Demon Scene)
The inside back cover features a cool JEFF GAITHER demon roaming about a scary MICHAEL RODEN hell.
